325 organizzazioni propongono una soluzione per il clima di cui nessuno parla

Molti di noi lo hanno gridato a squarciagola per anni e anni, scrivendone, facendo video, organizzando conferenze. Eppure questa soluzione è ancora ampiamente sconosciuta.

Ecco il testo della petizione:

Ai Partecipanti della Conferenza delle Nazioni Unite sui cambiamenti climatici COP26, Glasgow, Scozia, 1-12 novembre 2021

Come risultato delle richieste dell’ultima ora fatte dal governo degli Stati Uniti durante i negoziati del trattato di Kyoto del 1997, le emissioni militari di gas serra sono state esentate dai negoziati sul clima. Questa prassi è continuata nel tempo.

L’accordo di Parigi del 2015 ha lasciato il taglio delle emissioni militari di gas serra alla discrezione delle singole nazioni.

La Convenzione quadro delle Nazioni Unite sui cambiamenti climatici obbliga i firmatari a pubblicare le emissioni annuali di gas serra, ma il conteggio delle emissioni militari è volontario e spesso non viene incluso.

La NATO ha riconosciuto il problema, ma non ha proposto alcuna misura specifica per affrontarlo.

Non c’è una ragione convincente per questa lacuna. La guerra e i preparativi per la guerra emettono grandi quantità di gas serra. Tutte le emissioni di gas serra devono essere incluse negli standard obbligatori di riduzione delle emissioni di gas serra. Non ci deve essere più alcuna eccezione per l’inquinamento militare.

Chiediamo alla COP26 di stabilire limiti rigorosi per le emissioni di gas serra che non ammettano eccezioni per il militarismo, includano requisiti di pubblicazione trasparenti e verifiche indipendenti e non facciano affidamento su schemi di “compensazione” delle emissioni. Le emissioni di gas serra delle basi militari all’estero di un Paese devono essere completamente riportate e addebitate a quel Paese, non a quello in cui si trova la base.

Questo è tutto, un’idea semplice: includere quella che per molti paesi è la forma principale di distruzione del clima negli accordi con cui pretendono di ridurre la distruzione del clima. Non è niente di complicato, anche se potrebbe comportare la scelta di reindirizzare parte della spesa militare.

Ma qui abbiamo a che fare con fatti tenuti nascosti, informazioni che sono perfettamente disponibili eppure apparentemente impossibili da far conoscere a un numero significativo di persone. Ecco alcune idee su come risolvere questo problema:

  • portare la petizione e tutta la nostra energia e creatività a Glasgow per la conferenza COP26 insieme all’organizzazione CODEPINK.
  • fare lo stesso per gli eventi pre-COP26 che si tengono dal 28 al 30 settembre a Milano.
  • incoraggiare i gruppi e gli individui a organizzare eventi per portare avanti questo messaggio ovunque sulla Terra, il 6 novembre 2021 a Glasgow o in prossimità della grande giornata d’azione. Risorse e idee per eventi sono qui.
